Blue Sapphire-Fact and Fiction-Legend and Lore        

         Blue Sapphire-Ancient Persians believed Earth rested on a sapphire and its reflection colored the sky.

 

Blue Sapphire has long symbolized truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Tradition holds that Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred gemstone. Because sapphires represent divine favor, they were the gemstone of choice for kings and high priests. The British Crown Jewels are full of large blue sapphires, the symbol of pure and wise rulers.

 

Blue Sapphire- It is said that sapphire will refuse to shine when worn by the wicked or impure.

 

Blue Sapphire- Sacred to the god Apollo, the sapphire was often called the "celestial stone" because of its deep blue color, The Greeks identified the sapphire with Apollo, and the stone was worn when consulting oracles such as the famous one at Delphi.

 

Blue Sapphire-They were believed to have gender: dark stones were designated female, light ones were male, ancient priests and sorcerers honored sapphire above all gems, for this stone enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future.

 

Blue Sapphire-Marriage partners put great faith in the stone. If its luster dimmed, one knew his or her spouse had been unfaithful.

 

Blue Sapphire- This stone is worn to stimulate the third eye for the purpose of expanding psychic awareness. The ancient Greek practice mentioned above seems to indicate that even they were aware of the sapphire's ability to tap the subconscious mind.

 

Blue Sapphire-Sapphire is a guardian of love. That is, it promotes fidelity and attunes the feelings between lovers. Anciently it was also worn to banish envy, to promote positive social interaction and to reconcile with foes; sapphire can be used for all those purposes within any kind of relationship, not just martial.

 

Blue Sapphire-In 1929, workers clearing brush in the Mogok region of Burma (Myammar) discovered a 958 carat sapphire.   This spectacular stone, known as the "Gem of the Jungle" , is a vivid royal blue.   The rough stone was so large and of such fine color that, if cut into a single jewel, it would have exceeded the means of any potential buyer.   Therefore, the Jungle Gem was cut into nine smaller sapphires, the largest of which was over 66 carats.

 

Blue Sapphire-"The Rockefeller Sapphire",62 carats-John D Rockefeller Jr purchased this sapphire from a Maharajah in India in 1934, in 2001 it sold at auction at Christie's for three million, thirty one thousand dollars ($3,031,000) or over $48,000 per carat, setting a new record for a single blue sapphire.

 

Blue Sapphire-"The Stuart Sapphire"-Slightly larger than 104 carats-Mounted in the British Imperial State Crown with the crown jewels in the Tower of London.

 

Blue Sapphire-"The Logan Sapphire"-423 carats-Donated to the Smithsonian in 1960 by Mrs John A Logan.

 

 

Blue Sapphire-"The Blue Giant of the Orient"-486 carats-Believed to have been sold in 2004 by Christie's.
