GIA Certified 12 Ray Ceylon Gray Purple Star Sapphire 23.59 cts (12RAY2358)

Finding 12 ray stars is always a challenge. For that matter finding any good natural star sapphire is a challenge. Lets look at the numbers. For every 100 faceted corundum (ruby and sapphire) mined, approximately three stars are discovered. One will have good color and a bad star. One will have a great star and bad color. Only one out of a hundred will have a good star and good color. Now that's assuming you are looking for a 6 ray star, I can't even imagine what the odds are for a 12 ray star.
This star is certainly a standout in all respects. I really thought the dark gray-purple body color with the crisp 12 point star make this stone a real collectors piece.
Star Sapphire/Ruby Clarity | Transparent | Objects seen through the gemstone look clear and distinct. | Semitransparent | Objects look slightly hazy or blurry through the stone. | Translucent | Objects are vague and hard to see. | SemiTranslucent | Only a small fraction of light passes through the stone, mainly around the edges. | Opaque | Virtually no light can pass through the gemstone. |
