AGL Certified Madagascar Blue Star Sapphire 22.46 carats (BLUESTAR2246)

This star sapphire has a very interesting history. About 10 years ago I was in a gemstone trade show in Bangkok when I was first introduced to this star. The dealer selling it told me it was an unheated star sapphire hoe had just cabbed after he returned from Madagascar (Star Sapphires when cut, the process is called cabbing rather then cotting, hence the word cabachon).

I really loved the deep rich denim blue color (like an unwashed pair of Levis), and the strong star so I started to negotiate with the man...unsuccessfully.

The next day we reached an agreement, brought the stone home and locked it in my safe at home and its been there ever since. Recently I found it and got a report done on it from the AGL gem lab in New York. It's the first stone we EVER had certified that came back with the words "It is the opinion of the laboratory that the heated or unheated condition of this stone is not currently determinable". I admire that the gem lab won't write in the report anything that can't be proven, and in this case they could not be sure whether it was heated or not, only that it was a natural blue star sapphire. Sapphires since they are formed by the heat of the earth it sometimes is difficult if not impossible to tell whether a stone was heated in the earth or at a gem cutters oven.

As the report further states this star sapphire has a "strong to moderate star" and it rates the quality of the star as "Very good to good". This star is opaque with some color zoning which I actually think adds to its appeal.
